Man held at gunpoint
Briefs from the Squamish RCMP and Conservation Officer Service

On June 24 at 1:53 a.m. a male reported that he had been held at gunpoint in his vehicle after picking the suspects up downtown. The male and female suspects attempted to steal the complainant’s truck, but he was able to grab his keys and flee on foot in the Brackendale area. He ran to a service station and called police. The investigation has led to the arrest of two suspects on June 25. Ghyslain P. Noel, 35 years old of no fixed address, and Melanie Rapada, 35 years old of West Vancouver, were held in custody and are charged with robbery using a firearm and breach of probation as both were out of jail on conditions and probation from previous charges.

Prohibited driver arrested

On June 23 at 5:35 p.m. police checked a 1988 white Ford pick up, which was showing that the registered owner was prohibited from driving. The 46-year-old male driver gave a false name, date of birth. Investigation revealed that the driver was in fact the registered owner and he was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and he was arrested and released on a promise to appear for obstruction and driving while prohibited when he appears in court on Aug 19.

ATVer severely injured

On June 28 at 5:57 p.m., police were asked to assist B.C. Ambulance and Search and Rescue in securing a landing space for two helicopters landing near Quest University to assist an injured male ATV operator. The male was located and stabilized by SAR team members after crashing an ATV on the Ring Creek Rip trail. The male was out with a group of persons on ATVs when the group noticed he had been left behind. The group retraced the route and located the 52-year-old unconscious underneath his overturned ATV. He was long lined out by SAR members, transferred to a B.C. Ambulance helicopter and flown to Vancouver General Hospital with serious injuries.

Gas-doused fire flares up

On June 29 at 8:56 p.m. Squamish Fire Rescue attended to the 39000 block of Government Road with B.C. Ambulance and police where a 63-year-old male had thrown gasoline on an outdoor fire, which resulted in a flare up. The male was severely burned from his waist up and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Vandal caught on video

On June 25 at 4:42 p.m., a youth was observed on camera damaged the surveillance equipment at the North Shore Credit Union at Glenalder Place. Damage was estimated at $300 and the investigation is continuing and the youth caught on camera will be facing charges.

Cougar seen at Quest

On June 22, conservation officers attended a complaint of a cougar near the Quest University dining hall. Conservation officers and the RCMP followed the cougar to a safe distance through the neighbouring forest.

Bears attempt break ins

On June 25, conservation officers attended a Lions Bay residence where a bear attempted to enter a home through the patio door. A live trap was set nearby. On June 26, a small black bear entered a residence in the Spiral manufactured home park. Conservation officers attended and set a live trap in the area.

Used batteries are hazardous waste

June 25, conservation officers conducted a roadside hazardous waste transport inspection of a company carrying used batteries. A warning was issued for transporting waste against regulation.

Warnings issued to boaters

On June 28, conservation officers conducted small vessel safety inspections at the government dock. Three warnings were issued for failing to have proper safety equipment on board.

Bear relocated

On June 27, conservation officers immobilized and translocated a small but mature male black bear from the Garibaldi Estates area. The bear had been eating from neighbourhood cherry trees. Squamish residents are reminded that cherry season is rapidly approaching and people are encouraged to pick ripe fruit and collect fallen fruit as soon as possible to minimize the attraction of wildlife and reduce conflict.
