QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Arts & Entertainment
It’s best not to think
2012 Director: Roland Emmerich Cast: John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet Rated: PG-13 Running time: 158 minutes

This film is pornography.

Not in the consenting adults making love way. More in the way it should be seen.

Basically I’m saying that if you’re going to watch this movie, skip directly to the explosive climaxes (aka: the good bits) then get on with your day.

Otherwise, wasting three hours sitting through the whole thing will only leave you feeling dirty.

I certainly feel dirty having watched what can only be described as TV selling footage. There is nothing, repeat, nothing this movie has going for it besides special effects.

Granted the effects are expensive and I suppose they are impressive, but right or wrong, I needed more.

The lack of plot is unfortunate because there was an opportunity to mine the rich Mayan history. But alas no, they forgo that for ‘splosions and leave-your-brain-at-home effects.

It doesn’t help that the cast is pretty much an afterthought, and not even John Cusack or Woody Harrelson could save it.

But maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way. To quote a happy viewer “that was nothing more than brightly-coloured trash.”

That pretty much sums it up. 2012 did make millions upon millions on opening weekend, I suppose we can attribute this not due to the quality but that millions just wanted “brightly coloured trash.”

Let’s face it: There is a time and place for entertainment that demands you kill your brain for three hours.

If your time is now, the place is 2012.
