Local goalie Corey Koop can chalk his name up with the likes of NHLers Ron Hextall and Martin Brodeur after scoring his first career goal on Sunday (Jan. 31) at North Shore Ice Sports.

Koop’s Squamish House team was beating the North Van C3 squad 3-2 in the final minute when North Van pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. North Van dumped the puck into Squamish’s zone with players offside and Koop skated over to the puck and shot it down the ice. A North Van player dove in an attempt to stop the puck at his team’s blueline but the puck slid underneath and continued into the net.

Koop’s insurance goal with six seconds left in the game ensured a 4-2 Squamish victory.

San Jose Sharks Evgeni Nabokov is the NHL’s most recent goalie to score a goal by deliberately shooting the puck in 2002.
