‘Lovely’ isn’t quite right

The Lovely Bones Director: Peter Jackson Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci Rated 14A Running Time: 114min

I am very glad to report that this movie does not suck. That’s not to say it will make any “best of” lists but it certainly isn’t all bad. My hesitation in going full out recommending this film is mostly due to the subject matter.

Based on the breakout novel of the same name by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones provides a twist on the usual who-dun-it by telling you exactly what is happening while it is happening. This technique is actually quite effective as the story involves some pretty unsettling topics.

Mainly it’s the story of an absolutely lovely 14-year-old girl who is horribly… well the film never tells you exactly what happens, but either way she ends up brutally murdered.

So no, it’s not a feel good party movie. Rather it’s a well-told story about a serial rapist/killer and one victim’s transition from this world to the next.

Peter Jackson is no stranger to dealing with uncomfortable situations with little girls as one of his early films Heavenly Creatures is one of the best films of the ’90s. The man is definitely a visual genius and all his movies should be seen on the big screen and this is no exception.

You should be prepared for the ending though, which I found most unsatisfying. Especially after dealing with such combustible material I definitely expected more of a bang then a fizzle.
