Janyk 11th after first slalom run

Whistler's Michael Janyk stood in 11th place after the first run of the Olympic men's slalom event on Saturday (Feb. 27) at Whistler Creekside.

Janyk's first run of 49.18 seconds was 1.39 seconds behind that of first-place Giuliano Razzoli of Italy, and only 85 hundredths of a second behind third-place Benjamin Raich of Austria.

Trevor White of Calgary stood in 17th, 1.74 seconds back, after the first run, while Julien Cousineau of Lachute, Que., stood in 19th spot, 1.80 seconds behind Razzoli.

Canadian Brad Spence did not complete the first run.

Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, a.k.a. the Snow Leopard, Ghana's first winter Olympian, completed the first run in 1:09:08 and stood in 53rd of the 54 skiers who completed the first run. Erjon Tola of Albania, who had to hike back up the run more than once to complete the course, was in 54th in 1:33.94. Both received huge cheers from the crowd upon completing their runs.

Saturday’s second run was scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
