Souls of Mischief play Garf’s

Getting to see more than your fair share of live musical acts is just one of the perks of being in a resort town like Whistler.

Considering it’s a resort town dedicated to skiers, shredders, sledheads and all-around-partiers, you’re especially fortunate if you happen to be a fan of the urban, hip-hop and rap genres — because the resort certainly sees some hot acts coming through its nightclubs.

Case in point: Monday (July 12) at Garfinkel’s with the Souls of Mischief.

Formed in Oakland, CA by emcees A-Plus, Phesto, Opio and Tajai, Souls of Mischief is best known for its major label debut ’93 ‘til Infinity in 1993 — named one of the Top 100 Rap Albums by Source Magazine.

The group’s members are also part of the hip-hop collective (along with Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Casual and others) known as Hieroglyphics.

Souls of Mischief is currently touring with new material from the band’s fifth studio album called Montezuma's Revenge, produced by Prince Paul (De la Soul, Gravediggaz).

The band (whose music can also be found on the soundtrack to A Low Down Dirty Shame – a decent movie, in my opinion) plays Garf’s on July 12 with Boombox Saints, Matt Brevner and a bunch of DJs.

Tickets are a mere $10 and available at Billabong, Katmandu, Garf’s lobby or online at clubzone.com.

Doors open at 9 p.m.

WAG FUNDRAISER: The other thing that Whistler seemingly has more than its fair share of is dogs.

Whistlerites love their dogs, and they take them everywhere… hiking, biking, to the lake, to the trails and back home again — usually filthy and with that wet dog smell that just lingers, y’know?

My dog actually rolls in dead birds and such while on the trails.

He’s lucky he’s cute.

But thankfully, Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday (July 10) that’s the answer to at least the immediate smelly problem.

WAG’s Dog Wash fundraiser runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whistler Village Fire Hall, featuring a barbecue with ribs, hamburgers and hotdogs, plus a bake sale and live music with folk musician Susan Holden.

The suggested donation for the dog wash is $15 with all proceeds going to WAG.
