Celebrate Canada this Sunday

It is time to wave your flags and get ready for Canada Day celebrations on Sunday (July 1) when celebrations get underway at the new O’Siyam Pavilion on Cleveland Avenue. It all starts with a parade at 10 a.m. along Cleveland Avenue to Stan Clarke Park and the official opening ceremonies. There will be music, games, demonstrations, art shows, a farmers’ market, loggers sports show and entertainment for all ages. The evening will end with a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

The Murwillumbah Philharmonic Choir from Australia performs in Squamish on Monday, July 9, as part of a tour that follows Kathaumixw International Choral Festival in Powell River. The 35-member choir, whose members are begin billeted by members of our own Sea to Sky Singers, will sing on July 9 at 7:30 p.m. at St. John the Divine Anglican Church. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and are available at the door. Proceeds will help build a new roof at the church.

Another location to consider on July 1 is a visit to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park as it is free admission from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special Canada Day cake will be cut and enjoyed by all and there will also be a bean bag toss, tattoos for the kids and the Brightbill House will be open along with all facilities. Rides on the mini-rail are $3.50 per person.

An event at the Railway Heritage Park on July 1 will be the launch of “The Iron Horse” by Eric Johnston. It brings to life a history of the railways opening up in the Yukon, and how the mining industry brought people north in the early 1900s.

Registration for the Summer Reading Club at the Squamish Public Library is ongoing today (June 28) until 4 p.m. with programs beginning the first week of July. This year, program registration will occur on a weekly basis. Please call the library on the Friday prior to the program to register your child in the following week’s activity.

The Tinnitus Group is for those suffering from ringing in the ear and the next meeting will be on Tuesday (July 3) at 7 p.m. For more information, please call Peter at (604) 898-9775 or email peter@austeneverest.com.

The holiday hours at the Seniors Centre on Monday (July 2) will have the front office open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sit and Stand Fitness starts at 10:45 a.m. and carpet bowling at 1 p.m. Pilates is cancelled on that day. All the new fitness sessions start next week and please register at the front desk. The Interpretive Walking Series on Wednesday (July 4) starting at 9:30 a.m. will be buffers and edges with Dawn Green and Meg Fellowes.

The Healthy Brain Group for Older Adults will meet on Tuesday (July 3) at the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Ave. from 10 to 11 a.m. For more information, please contact Delores Stewart at (604) 892-6400.

A big thank you is extended to the many volunteers who gave of their time for the wildly successful visit by Thomas the Tank Engine over two weekends at the beginning of June at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. More than 10,000 visitors packed the park for train rides with Thomas and meeting with Sir Topham Hatt.

Every Thursday at the Heritage Park starting today (June 28) will be an Afternoon Tea and Scones Day in the education room at the station from 1 to 3 p.m. This will be a nice event to take your visitors to!

The monthly Acoustic Jam at the Brackendale Art Gallery will be held on Sunday (July 1) from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Anyone suffering from arthritis in his/her hands may wish to consider attending a two-hour session at the Squamish Public Library from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday (July 7) with OT and Certified Hand Therapist Delores Langford for a Hands and Arthritis session. There is no cost but to register, please call toll free to 1-866-414-7766.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors for grocery distribution on Wednesday (July 4) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

During July and August, the WOW riders will meet at 9 a.m. and on Monday (July 2) the group meets at Canadian Tire for a ride through favourite trails to the Nexen Lands and back. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715 or Thea at (604) 898-1695.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet on Tuesday (July 3) at 9 a.m. at the end of Tantalus Road for a Crouching Squirrel/Hidden Monkey hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

On Thursday (July 5) at 10 a.m. the Tantalus Walking Club meets across from the Mormon Church on Ross Road for a Rusty Bucket walk. For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.
