Excons win SSPA triple crown

Local slo-pitch club caps off impressive year with another win

The Squamish Slo-Pitch Association’s (SSPA) league wrap-up tournament this past weekend featured everything from lightning to thunder to a marriage proposal.

And that was just on Sunday (July 15).

The two-day tournament saw all 31 teams hit the field to wrap up the year, but the big winner was the A division champions, the Excons. The squad executed the rare triple crown this year by winning the May-long weekend tournament, finishing first in regular season play and winning the year-end tournament.

The Excons defeated the Hammers in the A finals to complete the triple crown, with the Rippers placing third. Excons team member Travis Jordan was also a winner as he proposed to teammate and girlfriend Jen Hicks after their team won the game. She said yes.

The thunder and lightning storm on Sunday did delay things a bit, but the weather didn’t seem to bother the Cliffside Wild Ones, who captured the B division crown by defeating the Tantalus Door Knobs. The Garibaldi Plumbing Pipers grabbed third place.

The Latham Tillers won the C division final after defeating the BrewJays, while the Rebels placed third. SSPA officials also announced that there will be a fall ball season starting in August, for more information visit www.squamish-slotpitch.com.
