Neal Kindree won another close one while plenty of Whistler mountain bikers had great results in the 10th annual Gearjammer on Saturday (July 21) in Squamish.
Kindree, coming off his narrow B.C. Bike Race win secured in Whistler earlier this month, finished the 48-kilometre course in two hours, 26 minutes, 22 seconds and held off Vancouver’s Jack Haig by 10 seconds for the hometown victory.
Michael Robinson had the top finish by a Whistler rider, finishing eighth overall in a time of 2:38:41. Felix Burke (2:43:08) recorded an impressive 12th-place finish overall and won the men’s junior division by nearly seven minutes.
Team Whistler’s Trevor Hopkins and Michael Boehm crossed the line in 15th and 16th overall, respectively, and Jesse Melamed finished 20th. Boehm’s time of 2:45:24 was also fastest out of the 58 riders in the men’s 30 to 39 division.
Tony Routley (25th) gave Team Whistler a total of five riders in the top 25.
Whistler’s Lisle Stopforth was the only junior girl to complete the course and clocked in at 3:44:55.
Other locals placing in the top 50 overall included junior racer Mahon Lamont (33rd), Joshua Stott (35th), Pemberton riders Terry Evans (37th) and Russ Wood (45th) and Whistler’s Quentin Emeriau (46th).
Coquitlam’s Sandra Walter (2:46:11) won the women’s pro-elite class and former Team Whistler rider Ann Yew was the runner-up. Chloe Cross (3:38:38) was Whistler’s top female rider and placed fourth in the women’s 30 to 39 race.
