Blow torch used in attempted theft

Whistler RCMP

Thieves unsuccessfully attempted to gain access to cash in this bank machine with a blow torch at the Meadow Park Sports Centre yesterday (Aug. 2) morning and set off the fire alarms in the process.

An acetylene torch was used by suspects attempting to steal cash from a bank machine early yesterday morning (Aug. 2).

Whistler Fire Rescue Service responded to a fire alarm at the Meadow Park Sports Centre at 4 a.m. yesterday morning.

After arriving on scene they discovered the alarm had been set off by suspects attempting to gain access to an ABM.

It appears that the suspect gained entry by removing an outside window, then used a welding torch to cut into the side of the ABM, RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton said. It appears that the welding torch set off the fire alarm, and the thieves left without gaining access.

Police attended to the scene and collected evidence that was left behind, and are investigating this matter.

Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around this time, or information regarding this crime can contact Whistler RCMP, or call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
