The community of Whistler has been remembering and paying tribute to a valued member with the news that Doug Deeks has passed away earlier this week.
Facebook and Twitter tributes were being posted on Friday (Aug. 3) in memory of the Deeks, who was in his early 80s.
Deeks and his wife Joan moved to Whistler permanently in 1990 from Ottawa after his retirement.
Rotarians, Village Hosts and original members of Whistler’s Senior Ski Team, the pair have been active and valued community members always willing to give their time as volunteers for events.
Deeks was honoured for his work with the Skatin First Nation by a Queen’s Jubilee Medal earlier this year.
Featured in last year’s summer edition of Whistler The Magazine alongside Joan, the pair spoke about how they envisioned their future in the resort.
“We want to continue to be part of the community, which is in our own funny way sometimes,” Doug said. “We realize that at some point in time we’ll have to face some other decisions, but we’ll hold on as long as we can. It’s a good life.”
