Conservation officers have issued eight tickets during the past week for attracting dangerous wildlife after a recent spate of incidents near the Alice Lake Provincial Park campground.
Two bear traps have been set up in the area as officers attempt to capture a mother bear and cub that have been accessing food in the campground area, Cst. Simon Gravel of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said on Tuesday (Aug. 7).
“Parks staff and others have been doing a lot of education, but people leave food out, we spend a lot of time tracking the bears,” Gravel said. “It’s a public safety concern and we want to educate the public that we are a bear-smart community and we want to keep it that way.”
The mother and cub have also been seen in and around the Dryden Creek campground and a separate, single bear has been raising officers’ concern near the Klahanie campground, Gravel said.
