Jeanie was an iconic black bear whose home range was in the Whistler area and was killed Oct. 20, 2011 as a result of preventable conflict with people.

She was laid to rest in the middle of that range, next to a stream near Olympic Station on Whistler Mountain and now a rock and memorial plaque have been placed at the site.

Jeanie's memorial plaque reads: "Jeanie 1990-2011 - Whistler Mountain's great matriarch laid to rest in her home range. Conflict with people cut her life short, yet her Spirit lives forever. Mother to seven sets of cubs and an extraordinary ambassador for her kind. May her legacy inspire us to find harmony with nature."

Her daughter, Jeanette, was sent to a Cub Rescue and Care Facility in Langley for the winter and was released to the wilds of the Elaho in June.
