Pemberton Mayor Jordan Sturdy is eyeing a move into provincial politics, announcing Tuesday (Oct. 23) that he intends to seek the Liberal Party nomination for the West Vancouver-Sea to Sky riding for the May 2013 provincial election.
Sturdy hopes to replace current B.C. Liberal MLA Joan McIntyre in next year's election, as McIntyre announced earlier this year that she would not seek a third term as the corridor's representative in Victoria.
“I deeply believe that social wellbeing is best supported by a vibrant economy and sustained by a healthy environment,” Sturdy said in a press release. “My values and ethics are best represented by the coalition which makes up the B.C. Liberals.”
Though some Liberal candidates have already been named in other ridings, no candidate selection meeting date for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky has been set as of yet.
“As a mayor and regional district director, I have been fully immersed in provincial, regional, first nations and local issues and have a clear understanding of community priorities and concerns,” Sturdy said in the release.
“West Vancouver-Sea to Sky is a constituency of enormous opportunity, diversity and potential. If nominated as part of Christy Clark's team, I will work hard to deliver for the constituents of the riding on issues, both big and small, that are important to them.”
The announcement comes just days ahead of Whistler hosting the provincial Liberal convention starting Friday (Oct. 26).
Premier Christy Clark is scheduled to make a keynote address when the two-day party convention wraps up Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27) at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
