Vienna Pardue, 3, and sister Sela, 2, take part in the Defend Our Coast demonstration at Nexen Beach on Wednesday (Oct. 24).

On Wednesday (Oct. 24), approximately 150 people braved the cold wind to demonstrate their opposition to Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.

Citizens who gathered at Nexen Beach signed a petition voicing their concern over the contentious project, which would run from Alberta to Kitimat, B.C. The demonstration was a part of a province-wide action organized by Defend Our Coast. Local organizer Nicole McRae said she was surprised by the large turnout to the first of two rallies planned for the day — the second taking place at 5:30 p.m.

“People really want to be a part of this,” she said.

The action comes two days after the big sit-in and demonstration in Victoria. On Monday (Oct. 22), approximately 3,000 people stood in front of the B.C. Legislature rallying against both the proposed Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipelines.
