One person is dead and another was transported to Vancouver in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Government and Depot roads in Brackendale on Thursday (Nov. 1).
The crash prompted authorities to close the intersection of the two roads for several hours while police investigated.
Each vehicle was being driven by a single occupant when the crash occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m., RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement. When The Chief arrived at the scene 30 minutes later, the intersection was surrounded by police vehicles and police marking tape. Officers were on the scene directing traffic and interviewing witnesses.
A B.C. Ambulance official told The Chief that a man was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital in critical condition. The other driver, a woman, was killed, the official said.
Police were still at the scene on Thursday at 11 p.m. The intersection was reopened by Friday (Nov. 2).
The investigation is ongoing, said RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride. A special unit was called to examine the accident scene and the vehicles are being put through mechanical inspections. Several witnesses who viewed the incident have been interviewed, he said.
“We always look at any chance of impairments,” Pride added.
The next the of kin have been notified. The victim is a long-term resident of Squamish and survived by two children.
“It is tragic,” Pride said, noting nothing they can do will bring someone's mother back. “Thank God there were no pedestrians injured as well.”
