Heavy snow and relatively warm temperatures have prompted officials to warn Sea to Sky backcountry users of a high potential for avalanches this weekend.
In an advisory issued late Thursday (Nov. 29), the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) rated the avalanche risk for the Sea to Sky region as “high” in the alpine for the next few days.
“New snow at upper elevations will build storm slabs on all aspects, overlying a variety of weak surface layers,” the advisory read. “Storm slabs and new wind slabs will be touchy, and natural avalanche activity is likely with heavy loading from snow and a strong southeast wind.”
A travel advisory provided as part of the CAC notice warns, “Avoid all avalanche terrain during periods of heavy loading from new snow, wind or rain.”
The avalanche hazard was listed as “considerable” at treeline and “moderate” below treeline.
