This year’s Sea to Sky Elementary Volleyball Tournaments proved to be the biggest and arguably the best in the event’s 16-year history.
It all went down on Friday (Dec. 7) with 11 boys teams battling it out at Don Ross Secondary School (DRSS) and 14 teams taking to the court at Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS).
The tournaments proved to be a show of dominance from the squads from Garibaldi Highlands Elementary (GHE), as the Cougars took home first place in the girls tournament, beating the Myrtle Philip Huskies from Whistler in an exciting three-game final. GHE also grabbed first and second in the boys’ tourney. Squamish Elementary placed fourth in the boys division and was the only other local school to advance to the final four.
It was a long day for all players as games started at around 2:30 p.m. and lasted will into the evening, with the finals concluding just after 9:30 p.m.
“This was a great tournament with a super atmosphere, excellent playing and good refereeing,” said tournament organizer Lisa Manzini. “The tournament is about volleyball, but it is really about bringing the kids together. It is a great event with great energy.”
Manzini also thanked the many volunteers, coaches and parents who helped allow the tournament to run smoothly.
