It’s less than two weeks before Christmas and if you’ve still got a geek or gadget lover on your list, I’ve got a few last-minute gift suggestions that every techie will love.
For the gamer in your life that likes to shoot things, pick them up either Call of Duty Black Ops 2 or Far Cry 3. The former just broke all entertainment records by grossing $1 billion in its first 15 days on the market, and is a time-skipping, first-person war shooter with incredible set pieces and wicked multiplayer and zombie modes. Far Cry 3 is also a first-person shooter that sees your character on an idyllic island resort for a vacation that turns into a struggle for survival when terrorists and more invade. The commercials call it “Skyrim with guns”; so expect open-world dynamics, multiple ways to complete missions, and a play-it-your-way style.
And although it is a year old, Skyrim is still a killer game — and one of the best I’ve personally ever played –— if your gaming geek happens to like dungeon delving, swords and sorcery.
Or, you could pick up Guild Wars 2, a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game where thousands of people adventure, quest and socialize together in a persistent world. Unlike most major MMOs that initially charge $15 a month to play in addition to the price of the base game, Guild Wars 2 started out free-to-play (just the cost of the game), and its graphics, combat mechanics and commitment by its developers to constantly upgrade and improve the game world make it a really good deal. It’s also a lot of fun and quite addictive to play. Just ask my wife, who has remarked that she’s been seeing a lot of the back of my head since I got the game.
For the person who always has her/his nose buried in a book, but is running out of room on his/her shelves to keep ’em all, give them a Kindle. Amazon’s little touch-screen gizmo is the most popular e-reader around, letting bookworms shop for, download, browse and read e-books, magazines, blogs and other digital media via wireless networking (Wi-Fi). Of course, you could also pick your special someone up a new iPad, with the retina display, and they can surf the ’Net, play HD games, watch TV and movies, listen to music, and much more… as well as read e-books and other digital media. That’d get you some big time points, no doubt.
For the person on your list who spends a lot of time in his/her car, maybe try Griffin’s SmartTalk Solar, a solar-powered, hands-free Bluetooth smartphone speaker that you’ll virtually never have to recharge.
What about the guy who does nothing but sit on his couch and watch TV or play console games? Try picking up a cool universal remote, so the person won’t have to juggle four while navigating their TV, Xbox, cable receiver and PVR.
Finally, if all else fails and nothing seems just right, get the a subscription to her/his favourite tech or gaming magazine, so he/she can give you hints for the next 12 months about what they really want. Good luck, and Merry Christmas.
