Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) students dove into the holiday spirit during the annual Seniors Centre Variety Show on Thursday (Dec. 13).
Approximately 50 students performed, showing a range of different and unique talents to local seniors.
“I think we did amazing,” said Grade 12 student Angela Cho. “We were all in high spirits, everyone was smiling and all of the performers gave their best.”
Cho, who performed Chopin?s “Nocturne” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel and appreciated performing for the interested crowd.
“The seniors seemed to really appreciate our enthusiasm and helped keep our spirits up as well,” she said. “I heard some seniors singing along too — that really made me happy.”
One of the residents came into the back where the students were getting ready to perform offering goodies and treats saying how thankful he was, telling them, “You do a great job every year.” The atmosphere turned into a positive experience for both seniors and students.
“I think Howe Sound students are just generally pretty committed when it comes to putting on events,” Grade 12 student Paige Mader said. “And I know there are a lot of kids out there who just love getting the opportunity to perform and share with people. I ?rmly believe the event was a success. Everyone is so talented. I think it went well.”
HSSS vice-principal Ms. Cho said the partnership between the two groups benefits everyone.
“It started four years ago when HSSS students put on a variety show for the seniors,” she said. “Students enjoy performing and baking for the seniors, they like to spend time with them and the seniors appreciate the time and effort that goes into putting on a show such as this. Some seniors don't have grandchildren nearby; this is a great way for the students to connect with the elderly in the community. A win-win situation for all.”
