Squamish firefighters battled a blaze in a downtown trailer yesterday afternoon (Jan. 16).

At 4:09 p.m., the Squamish Fire Rescue received a call, said Bob Fulton, the fire department's deputy fire chief. Two fire trucks arrived at a construction lot behind the Eaglewind apartments, to find a trailer containing building supplies engulfed in flames.

"There was no one in there when we got there," Fulton said.

The trailer's door had previously been pried open, he noted. No gas or electricity was hooked up to the structure, Fulton said. The fire department is investigating whether the fire was deliberately set or cause unintentionally by someone escaping the cold, Fulton said.

"If that was the case we can usually determine that," he said.

Trailers go up quickly, Fulton said. They're composed with light wood, covered with metal siding — mimicking an oven, he noted. If people see suspicious activity near or around buildings, they should call police, Fulton reminded the public.

Wednesday was a busy day for first responders. The fire department attended six calls — three medical emergencies, two alarms and the fire.
