Many of us are oblivious to the fact that our country’s elected leader wants to change the Navigable Waters Act through Bill C-45, and if you aren’t sure what that is, it means that only 62 rivers, 97 lakes and three oceans will be protected, which is approximately 90 per cent less than last year. You can go online to see if your favourite water body is protected, and when you see this you will notice that many of the water bodies that are protected are in the east... makes you wonder.
We cannot let this travesty happen. The world supply of fresh water is depleting, only three per cent of all Earth’s water is freshwater. The majority of fresh water, about 69 per cent, is locked up in glaciers and ice caps. Of all the freshwater on Earth, only about 0.3 per cent is contained in rivers and lakes — yet rivers and lakes are where most of the water we use in our everyday lives exists.
If you think this is ridiculous, please voice your opinion, inform others, sign protests, and write letters to your local MP. We cannot lose any more fresh water to construction, pollution and just plain destruction.
Please make a difference. Do not let this happen to our beautiful country. If we don’t stand up for Canada, who will?!
