Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham this week was awarded a medal for his work in building federal and municipal partnerships.
On Monday (Feb. 18), the District of Squamish announced Kirkham had received a Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the community. Nominated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Kirkham was recognized for creating a “new era for federal-municipal partnership over the past decade.”
“FCM chose [Kirkham] to receive this distinction for [his] exemplary efforts to make your community a great place to live,” FCM president Karen Leibovici stated in a press release. “It recognizes the important role municipalities — and their elected leaders — play in ensuring our prosperity and high quality of life.”
Squamish's involvement with FCM has made possible the federal-municipal partnership that led to the Gas Tax Fund, the Building Canada Plan and the federal government's commitment to develop a new long-term infrastructure plan, noted the district release.
Kirkham said he was honoured to receive the award.
“We are a vibrant and diverse community on the cusp of greatness and comprised of engaged and active citizens; this medal is recognition of that reality,” he stated.
In celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne 60 years ago, the medals were designed to highlight significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. Approximately 60,000 medals are being distributed across the country.
“I pledge my ongoing commitment to serving the community and to helping shape it into what I know it can become,” Kirkham stated.
