With one week remaining on the schedule, the jockeying for position in the standings of the Howe Sound Men’s Soccer League was on full display on Sunday (March 10).
B&B Excavating clinched first place in the league with a 6-1 win over Galileo. The defending champs have only lost one game this calendar year and continued its strong play against Galileo.
Jag Sangha and Hans Schranz scored two goals apiece for B&B, with Chris Johnstone and Russell Adams also adding goals. Jay Lewis scored the lone goal for Galileo, who remained in second place despite the setback.
Second place for the league is still up in the air after the Ellis Moving Eagles and Automind played to a 3-3 tie. Nathan Ward (two) and Matt Rollinson scored for the Eagles, with Istvan Richter picking up a hat trick for Automind.
The afternoon game saw Sikh Temple snag a default win over Lilwat FC. This Sunday (March 17) will see the battle for second place occur between Galileo and the Eagles. Galileo will clinch second place and a bye with either a win or tie against the Eagles. For Ellis Moving it’s simple — a win and the Eagles move into second place.
However, if the Eagles lose to Galileo and Sikh Temple beats B&B on Sunday, then Temple could leapfrog the Eagles into third place. Automind, who will take on Lilwat on Sunday, could also finish as high as fourth with a win combined with a Temple loss.
The first week of playoff action will see the third-place team face off against Lilwat, with the fourth and fifth seeds also battling it out. The top two teams in the regular season will receive byes.
