Monday evening (June 3) search and rescuers scoured the Mamquam Blind Channel in a hunt for a missing person.
At 6:30 p.m., Squamish's Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCM-SAR) was paged by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria, Squamish station leader Scott Shaw-MacLaren wrote in an email to The Chief.
The coordination centre was responding to reports of an overturned canoe in the Blind Channel. A report came in that a person was seen struggling in a canoe. When the observer looked again, the person was gone and the canoe was upside down, rescue coordinator Colin Henthorne said.
The canoe was found around the Squamish Yacht Club marina, he said. The canoe and a boot were recovered.
“It was handed over to the RCMP as a missing persons case,” Henthorne said.
RCM-SAR was joined by Squamish Search and Rescue and the RCMP in the search for the missing person. An additional RCM-SAR vessel was dispatched from Horseshoe Bay and a Cormorant helicopter flew low, up and down the channel.
“We did not recover a missing person and RCM-SAR was stood down at approximately 10 p.m. for the night,” Shaw-MacLaren wrote. “RCM-SAR crews remain on stand-by for any other assistance we can provide in the coming days.”
The Chief will update this story as more information comes in.
