The Howe Sound Sounders senior boys basketball team didn’t get any favours from the schedule makers but still put together a good effort in the team’s first game of the season on Thursday (Nov. 28).
Kicking off the regular season against highly ranked St. Thomas Aquinas (STA), Howe Sound lost 88-64 but head coach Max Roy was pleased with the way his team got better over the course of the game.
“We started out slow as it was our first game of the season,” he said in an email. “The boys were nervous and STA is a very good team.”
Roy pointed out that the Sounders outscored STA 37-34 in the second half and said that type of effort bodes well for his team.
“I am extremely proud of how the team played in the second half of the game,” he said. “Seeing that we were able to win the second half when they still had their starters out there shows me that this team has a huge upside.”
Randeep Grewal led the Sounders with 37 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
The Sounders took on West Vancouver’s Rockridge Secondary on Monday (Dec. 2) but results were not available at press time. The team will also play in the first-ever Sea to Sky Classic basketball tournament on Dec. 14 at Quest University. The Sounders are challenging Langley’s Brookswood Secondary at the event.
The first home game for the senior boys team is on Dec. 19 when they host Pemberton Secondary at HSSS gym. It’ll be a doubleheader with the junior boys playing Pemberton at 3:30 p.m. and the senior boys hitting the court at 5 p.m.
