One of the community's most popular fundraising events is threatened with cancellation in 2014 unless local volunteers step up to help with its organization.
The Canadian Cancer Society is looking for volunteer organizers to help shepherd the Relay for Life Sea to Sky through 2014 and beyond, officials said in a statement issued on Monday (Dec. 9). The 2013 relay, which took place in June at Don Ross Secondary School, was the seventh edition of the event, in which local teams come together to walk in honour of those who have died and those who have survived the ravages of cancer.
Teams who sign up for the relay take part in various fundraising efforts leading up to the event.
Lower Mainland-based organizers put together the 2013 event after the previous local organizers stepped aside. The 2013 event was also moved from September to June, but the number of participants saw a decline.
The 2014 version of the event is scheduled to take place June 21 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Don Ross Secondary School — but only if local volunteers step up, society officials said.
“Each year an amazing and dedicated team of volunteers helps the Canadian Cancer Society staff put on a fantastic relay in Squamish,” Brooke Sherwood, team lead for community giving for the Canadian Cancer Society's B.C. and Yukon branch, said in a statement. “We need the community's involvement to help us make this event happen this year.”
The society is specifically looking for volunteers for the organizing committee and has a variety of roles to suit everyone's backgrounds.
“All we need is three to four dedicated individuals to help us get started,” Sherwood said. “We want to make this event happen but we can't do it without the support and assistance of the community. It's an incredible opportunity to celebrate the lives of Squamish residents who have survived their cancer battle and to remember those we've lost.”
Society officials plan to decide in January whether the Relay for Life in Squamish for will take place in 2014. For information, email Sherwood at email@example.com or phone (604) 215-5205.
