Broadway musical '9 to 5' snags a record 15 Drama Desk nominations

NEW YORK - 9 to 5" has set a Drama Desk record and it hasn't even won any awards yet.

The Broadway musical based on the 1980 hit movie received 15 Drama Desk nominations Monday, breaking the old record of 14 nominations, held by five other shows including "The Producers" and "Hairspray."

"9 to 5" features a score by Dolly Parton, who received two nominations - one for her music and one for the lyrics of the show. It will compete for best musical of the 2008-2009 New York theatre season against "Billy Elliot," "Liza's at the Palace ...," "Shrek," "The Story of My Life" and "Fela!"

Best-play nominations went to "Body Awareness" by Annie Baker, "Becky Shaw" by Gina Gionfriddo, "reasons to be pretty" by Neil LaBute, "Ruined" by Lynn Nottage, "Fifty Words" by Michael Weller and "Lady" by Craig Wright.

"9 to 5" had not officially opened when the nominations were announced. Nominators were let into preview performances.

The Drama Desk, which was founded in 1949, honours both Broadway and off-Broadway productions.

The awards show will take place May 17 at Lincoln Center.
