Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,153.10 up 53.04 points):

Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM). Wireless technology. Up $1.77, or 17.30 per cent, $12 on 12,582,454 shares. The smartphone maker's stock closed to a high not seen since May after National Bank analyst Kris Thompson hiked his target on RIM shares to US$15 from $12. RIM unveils its new line of smartphones Jan. 30 with a global product release of BB10 set on February 2013, a month ahead than expected.

TORC Oil and Gas Ltd. (TSX:TOG). Oil and gas. Down four cents, or 1.55 per cent, at $2.54 on 7,983,696 shares.

Spartan Oil Corp. (TSX:STO). Oil and gas. Up two cents, or 0.41 per cent, at $4.85 on 4,158,204 shares. The Calgary-based company announced Wednesday that it will merge with Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). The new entity will have an enterprise value of close to $1 billion.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up three cents, or 0.99 per cent, at $3.07 on 3,826,617 shares. Striking workers at its railcar assembly plant in La Pocatiere, Que., have rejected what Bombardier characterized as a generous offer.

Sun Life Financial Inc. (TSX:SLF). Insurer. Up 20 cents, or 0.74 per cent, at $27.10 on 2,567,446 shares. The financial sector inched up 0.33 per cent.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurer. Up four cents, or 0.32 per cent, at $12.40 on 2,023,575 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,248.36 up 5.70 points):

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). Oil and gas. Down two cents, or 1.10 per cent, at $1.79 on 9,439,646 shares. The Calgary-based company is joining forces with Spartan Oil Corp.

Andina Minerals Inc. (TSXV:ADM). Metals explorer. Up a penny, or 1.30 per cent, at 78 cents on 3,368,265 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE). Telecommunications and media. Up 26 cents, or 0.62 per cent, at $42.12 on 563,183 shares. Bell Canada will cut 90 clerical and sales staff in Ontario as it closed offices and consolidate others, the union representing the workers said after markets close. The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union said another 80 employees will also be affected by the consolidation.

Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB). Oil and gas. Down 10 cents, or 0.26 per cent, at $38.70 on 379,247 shares. The oil and gas distributor announced after markets closed that it plans a $1.8-billion expansion to a pipeline that runs between two major Alberta oil hubs. The expansion to Enbridge's mainline system between Edmonton and Hardisty, Alta., will include a new 91-centimetre diameter line plus additional tankage and terminal facilities.
