PARIS - Visitors to Paris hoping for a late-night makeover can get the chance on the Champs-Elysees after Sephora won the right to stay open after 9 p.m. — a nocturnal rarity in a country that tends to close up so early. But the court ruled that the cosmetics chain had to close another store on Sundays — when nearly everything nationwide is shuttered.
The commerce union had contested the late nights and the Sunday work, saying employees were being pressured to work undesirable shifts. Sephora countered with a full-page ad saying more than a fifth of its sales were at late hours and cutting back the hours threatened 45 jobs.
Late-night shopping in Paris is largely limited to the Champs-Elysees, one of the city's most popular tourist destinations.
