ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador's government is providing $200,000 to fund nine projects designed to reduce violence against aboriginal women and children.
Projects announced Wednesday include cultural awareness building at the St. John's Native Friendship Centre and a three-day women and girls' retreat run by the NunatuKavut Community Council.
The funding will also allow 20 to 25 women to go on a wilderness retreat organized by the Sheshatshiu Innu Band Council, and improve training for staff at the Natuashish women's shelter.
Charlene Johnson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, says the annual grants program is helping improve the lives of aboriginal women and children.
Over the last eight years, 81 projects have been funded through this program.
The violence prevention initiative is a six-year partnership between governments and communities.
