A quick look at abuse of people with intellectual disabilities in Ontario and Alberta based on provincial government reports:
The Ontario government says in training videos that people with intellectual disabilities are physically abused four to 10 times more frequently than people without disabilities.
From Oct. 1, 2010, until Sept. 30, 2011, there were 488 serious incident occurrence reports of alleged abuse or mistreatment filed from agencies in Ontario that serve 60,000 people with developmental disabilities.
In Ontario, reports say there were 36 cases where staff were fired, and six staff members who were charged with a criminal offence.
Records say there were 14 instances of residents mistreating other residents in Ontario, ranging from unwanted sexual advances to biting.
Alberta Health says there were 39 incidents of abuse of people with intellectual disabilities from July 1, 2010, to May 1, 2012.
Reports say there were 21 cases of staff abusing people in their care in Alberta during that period, with incidents including shouting and hitting.
Reports say there were also 18 cases of residents abusing other residents in Alberta where investigators decided staff could have taken steps to prevent the abuse.
