NDP says Red Deer seniors' facility cancels Alberta Health Services contract

RED DEER, Alta. - The New Democrats say a seniors' facility in Red Deer at the centre of a labour dispute has cancelled a contract with Alberta Health Services.

Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge issued a lockout notice to 130 nurses and other staff after their union served strike notice.

NDP Leader Brian Mason has released a letter that says the company has cancelled its agreement with the government agency to provide 49 publicly-funded long-term care beds.

It was not immediately clear how this will affect people who live at the facility.

The company has said the workers were seeking wage increases of more than 30 per cent over four years.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees says its members want to be paid the same as workers who do similar jobs at hospitals and nursing homes.
