A deserving student from Squamish will soon have financial help to afford the cost of post-secondary education.
The Squamish Community Foundation has been entrusted with the newly established Ron Anderson Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund created by Squamish Terminals in honour of the organization’s late CEO, Ron Anderson.
The fund will support an annual scholarship of $1,000 for a Grade 12 student living in the Squamish area who is registered to attend a post-secondary institution program in business, transportation or political science, and who has demonstrated service to his or her community.
Once an outstanding business leader and dedicated volunteer, Anderson was dedicated to the community and filled his time with leadership positions with the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Squamish, the West Coast Railway Heritage Association and the Corridor’s Mayor’s Committee.
The scholarship is set up with seed funding from Squamish Terminals, and additional contributions from Neptune Terminals, British Columbia Maritime Employers Association, Envirochem Services Inc. and individual donors.
“The fund will create a long-term legacy of supporting post-secondary education for students in the corridor,” said the Squamish Community Foundation in a news release. “Ron Anderson was a consummate leader in the Squamish community and we are truly honoured to recognize his legacy through the management and distribution of the Ron Anderson Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund.”
Applications will be accepted in the spring from students wishing to apply with the first scholarship being awarded for the 2017/2018 school year.
