Guiding PrincipalsThere is an energy in Squamish that is hard to escape. From the endless possibilities outdoors, to the young families opening new doors, this is a community on the move. We are a community of 17,000 at a crossroads; with the jobs of yesterday fading in our memory, we need to envision what Squamish could be tomorrow. We are a community that can determine our own future, and that can start to fulfill the dream of Live, Work, Play. We can grow responsibly, we can lay out a framework to support sustainable economic growth, and we can make the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada a world class brand. As a community we need to come together and create a vision for the Squamish of tomorrow, and start planting the seeds for a community that doesn't just grow, but thrives.Live Squamish is a community that is going to face increased interest from the outside world due to its proximity to Vancouver and it's relative affordability in our regional context. As a community we need to accept that growth is coming, and create a clear vision about how we grow. When we need to build, we should strive to create sustainable communities that are mixed economically and socially, and that present a variety of housing options for people in different stages of life. Current neighborhoods should have the ability to densify as a means to accommodate growth, and to create opportunities for people to age in place. To encourage sustainable practices in new construction, the District of Squamish could offer a graduated Development Cost Charge scheme where the charges relate to the efficiency of the building systems, and ultimately, District of Squamish municipal services. By allowing diverse, compact neighborhoods, transit can be effective, predictable, and economically viable.Nate Dolha Information:Website: www.buildtomorrow.caTwitter: @natedolhaFacebook: "Nate Dolha for Squamish Council"
