Known throughout Squamish as a successful bank manager, business leader and community volunteer, Kirkham is focused on improving the economic, cultural and environmental factors of the community. "Significant changes and progress made over the last three years has laid the foundation for Squamish to continue to develop and prosper as a complete and whole community," said Kirkham. "It is now time to capitalize on the successes of the past few years. This requires strong leadership and a focus on the key issues of today and tomorrow".
Since being elected on Council, Kirkham has demonstrated his leadership by serving as Chair of the Squamish Sustainability Corporation, Chair of the Finance Committee, and as a member of the Economic Development Committee, as well as the Seniors Select Committee. Prior to the last three years on council, he has held several key positions in the community including Chair of the Squamish Community Foundation and President of the Chamber of Commerce.
"The priorities of the next council will entail making decisions based on thoughtful consideration of fiscal responsibility and long term consequences," said Kirkham. "As Mayor of Squamish, I will ensure that we focus on developing our local economy by following our economic strategy plan, helping existing local businesses to prosper and draw new, targeted employers to town, of which a key attraction will be advancing the Oceanfront Development from a plan to a reality".
Kirkham also has stated that he will take early retirement from his current employment to fully dedicate his time to the position of mayor. He and his wife Donna recognize the commitment and energy required to be mayor of an evolving community like Squamish. As a family, they are devoted to ensuring a bright, prosperous future for Squamish.
