Back to work in Squamish: Expect rain and cooler temps today

Well, if you are back to work today after the long weekend, you may be comforted to know it will rain today, May 21. 

The weather maybe matches the mood after the Canucks loss to the Oilers last night (so close!). There’s always next year! 

As noted, we can expect rain today, with a high of 13 C and an overnight low down to 8 C. 

Environment Canada says we can expect 10 to 15 millimetres of rain. The rain should end this morning, followed by clouds for the rest of the day.

The next low tide today, May 21, is at 11:15  a.m. (1.18  metres), according to tide-forecast.com.

The high tide is at 6:35  p.m.(4.31 m).

There will be another low tide tonight at 11:38  p.m. (3.33 m).

The water temperature in Howe Sound today is 14.6 C, according to seatemperature.info.

The calculation is made using historical data over a decade. 

The warmest water on May 21 in Howe Sound was 16.9 C in 2015, and the coldest was12 C in 2022. 

According to the site, the sea water temperature in Howe Sound is expected to drop to 14.5 C in the next 10 days. 

The May average water temperature in the sound is 13.2 C, the minimum temperature is 9.9 C, and the maximum is 18 C.

Good fishing day?

Today is a good fishing day in Squamish, with the best bite time (not counting early this morning, which has come and gone) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., according to Tideschart.com.

On the water

Squamish RCMSAR says it is “steering boaters towards safety” this Safe Boating Awareness Week, which runs from May 18 to 24.

As the weather warms and water travel becomes more popular, Squamish RCMSAR says folks should follow these safety precautions:

  • Wear a lifejacket
  • Boat sober
  • Bring safety equipment and test prior to departure
  • Familiarize yourself with the visiting area
  • Be aware of submerged objects
  • Leave a sail plan with loved ones and check the weather before departure
  • Always have a way to call for help: Use channel 16 on a marine VHF radio or dial *16, #727 or 911 on a cell phone, if there is service.

Wednesday, Environment Canada says to expect a mix of sun and cloud, with a high of 19 C and a low down to 11 C.

Thursday will be more of the same, with a mix of sun and cloud. We can expect a high of 17 C and a low down to 11 C. 

Friday we can expect showers, with a high of 19 C and a low down to 11 C overnight. 

Events

If you are planning your social calendar for the week, note that Acting Like Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath Tribute Band) is at Trickster's Hideout on May 24 from 8:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The 18th Annual Hike for Hospice Celebration takes place on May 25 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Junction Park & O'Siyam Pavilion.

It is Day Out With Thomas, time at the Railway Museum of British Columbia. On Saturday, May 25th, the train leaves the station at 10:30 a.m. 

Looking even further ahead, there’s the Recycle Bicycle event on June 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1009 Centennial Way. Squamish Helping Hands will be “taking donations of used bikes and repairing them so that someone else can use it.”

Also on June 1, Toronto-based electronic duo MOONBEAN will play at Trickster's Hideout from 2 p.m. to  4 p.m.

Gas prices

Must be the end of a long weekend, as there is some variety in pricing at the pumps across the Sea to Sky Corridor today.

According to our latest data, the cheapest gas at Squamish pumps today is 201.9 cents per litre, at at least two stations— the CO-OP at 38183 Cleveland Ave. and the Shell at 1580 Highway 99.

Drivers will find the cheapest Whistler gas—200.9/L—at the Star West Petroleum Cardlock. You will pay 201.9/L at other stations. 

The lowest you can pay for petrol at the pump in Pemberton today is 200.9/L at AC Gas.
