A Smoky Skies Bulletin was issued by the Ministry of Environment yesterday, indicating that residents should consider avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and lung or heart conditions. If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact a doctor: difficulty breathing, chest pain or discomfort, sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways.

Making matters worse, several days of hot weather are expected, with temperatures soaring to the mid to upper-30s in Howe Sound, according to Environment Canada. The amount of smoke, however, can lower the temperature on the ground.

The most vulnerable to heat are young children, pregnant women, the elderly, those working or exercising in the heat, people with chronic illness and those living alone in un-air-conditioned homes and the homeless. Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle.
