Bike thefts hit Squamish

Here's this week's Squamish RCMP new briefs
File
Squamish RCMP are targeting bike thefts.

On Tuesday (July 1) at approximately 4 a.m., an expensive mountain bike secured with a cable lock was stolen from the 40700 block of Tantalus Road.  The cable lock had been cut using cable cutters. Members on patrol recovered the bike a few blocks away in a hidden location. Two suspects were also located in the immediate vicinity and one was in possession of cutters capable of cutting the cable lock. They were arrested in connection with the incident. The investigation continues and it is expected that charges will be laid.

Fatal fall while hiking

On Saturday (July 5) at approximately 4:30 p.m., a man from Maple Ridge who was hiking on Sky Pilot Mountain fell 30 metres off a cliff and succumbed to the injuries he suffered at the scene. He had been hiking with two other men when they became disoriented and went off the trail and into a treacherous area.

Due to inclement weather and the remoteness of the area where the accident occurred, it was not possible to extricate his body until the morning of July 7. This was done by means of a long line from a helicopter. The identity of the man was known and his family was notified immediately of this tragic event.

Mailbox broken into

A mailbox located beside the Cliffside Pub was broken into on Friday (July 4).  There are no suspects or witnesses in this event and the owner is not certain what had been taken from the mailbox.

Prohibited Driving

On Friday (July 4), at 8 p.m., a driver was stopped at a police checkstop at Mamquam Road and Highway 99 as part of the enhanced impaired driving counterattack program for the summer. While he did not display signs of impairment, he failed to produce his driver’s license and police checks revealed he was a prohibited driver. Charges of driving while prohibited are being recommended.

Theft of bikes

On Saturday (July 5) at 8:30 a.m. a report was received that two bikes had been stolen from the campsite at Stawamaus Chief Provincial Park. The bikes were locked up to a picnic table in the campground. One was a yellow Argon 18 and the other a black Kona Cyclo Cross. No other campers witnessed the theft and no suspects have surfaced to date.

‘CounterAttack’ underway

With the support of the BC Government and ICBC, police across the province have launched the annual Summer CounterAttack campaign. Extra officers will be assigned at selected times to supplement regular patrols for impaired drivers.

Police want you to enjoy your summer. However, if alcohol or other intoxicants are involved, plan ahead for a safe way home. Arrange a designated driver, call a taxi or take transit.
