Squamish Search and Rescue members escort two of the seven rescued campers to the helicopter in the Squamish Valley on Sunday during flooding. As of Monday, 26 campers remained stranded, said rescue manager Katy Chambers.

Seven campers were rescued Sunday due to heavy rains and flooding in the region.

Squamish Search and Rescue (SSAR) manager Katy Chambers told The Squamish Chief that five adults and two children were rescued by helicopter. "Their vehicles were trapped in the Upper Squamish Valley due to creeks washing out sections of the Forest Service Road," she said.

"We are on standby today [Monday] as there are more people camped up the valley but are hoping once water levels drop they are able to drive out," Chambers added.

She said about 26 people remained trapped as of Monday morning due to flooding. While emergency officials believe that most of those trapped will be able to drive out as water levels abate, two people might still have to be rescued, unless they can walk out, said Chambers.

Others have lost their vehicles due to the flooding, said the SSAR manager, noting there were "at least five that were swept into the river" during the flooding due to the rain.

On Sunday, a flood warning was issued from EmergencyInfo BC for the Sea-to-Sky Corridor, including the Lillooet River and surrounding streams and the Squamish River.
Streamflows on the Squamish River near Brackendale were at 1790 m3/s., a flow rate exceeds the five-year return period flow, the agency reported.

"Flows increased rapidly today [Sunday] due to high intensity rainfall concentrated in the region," the report stated.
