The rumours are true. Squamish’s family-owned waste management company has changed hands.

Carney’s Waste Systems, which started in Squamish in 1965 has been sold to Gordon Smith of Smithrite.

Smith bought Carney’s Waste Systems from Owen Carney March 1, according to
Carney’s Paty Taylor.

According Taylor, “there should be no changes at all,” that customers will see.

Although Smith is the owner of Smithrite, he told Glacier Media he purchased Carney’s independently and the two companies will continue to operate separately.

In addition to the obvious residential garbage and recycling pickup, Carney’s also provides services ranging from removal of construction and demolition debris to portable toilet rentals, and special events waste management.

Smith is the son of Smithrite Disposal’s founders, Ascher and Irene Smith, who launched the company in the Lower Mainland in 1947.

Prior to taking on Carney’s business, Smith’s Smithrite boasted 150 employees and had more than 100 service vehicles, according to the company’s website.

Carney’s boasts 30 trucks and approximately 85 employees. The company and its employees have participated in many community organizations and events over the years, including the Rotary Club of Squamish and community parades.
