CN Rail, district strike a deal

Works starts on new park along Mamquam Blind Channel

CN Rail crews removed the rail from the spur line that runs beside Loggers Lane on Feb. 26, 2014.

Squamish is set to welcome more action into its downtown core, as residents get to work on a pump track and slacklines.

Last year, the District of Squamish acquired two acres of industrially zoned Mamquam Blind Channel waterfront land through a provincial government program. The municipality plans to convert the lot into a park. The problem is, to get to it, residents have to cross CN Rail tracks — an action the violates the company’s regulations.

But as of last week, the two parties had an deal in place to allow public access to the property, Linda Glenday, general manager of development services, told council on Tuesday (June 10). The Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association is slated to begin work on a bicycle pump track, she noted. A number of slacklines will also be placed on the lot. The work is expected to take up to 10 days, Glenday said.
