Squamish residents should expect extreme weather starting Tuesday afternoon, with heavy rain and warm temperatures expected to carry on midweek.

The storm is expected to hit the South Coast beginning Tuesday and lasting until Thursday, according to the province’s River Forecast Centre.

Up to 170mm of rainfall is estimated, and the Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory for the Stawamus River, Squamish River and tributaries in the Squamish area.

Rising temperatures on Tuesday are expected to cause snowmelt, which will contribute to river runoff. Peak river levels are expected on Wednesday or potentially into Thursday.

Residents are reminded to avoid river banks and shorelines, which can be unpredictable during heavy rainfall. Homeowners should also clear catch basins, culverts and ditches in preparation for the storm.

The District of Squamish says it will monitor storm conditions and the operations crew is prepared for high river flows.
