A familiar face to many in Squamish is hoping to take back his seat at the House of Commons.

Former Conservative MP John Weston said that he will be seeking a nomination from the Tories to run in Squamish’s riding.

Previously, he was MP in West Vancouver — Sunshine Coast — Sea to Sky Country from 2008 to 2015.

“The unprecedented events of 2020 have led me to a decision with some precedent — I’m going to run again for a seat in the House of Commons,” said Weston in a news release. “To succeed, I must first win the nomination of the Conservative party in our riding, the place I call home.”

Weston, a lawyer from West Vancouver, has focused his career on government relations, Indigenous affairs, and on securing human rights for Canadians wrongfully detained overseas.

He also founded the Canadian Health and Fitness Institute.

“As vaccines appear, we have to set our eyes on the light at the end of the pandemic horizon,” said Weston.  “We must rebuild, restoring the dynamism for which our communities are renowned, including West Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, Sechelt, Gibsons, and Bowen Island. To rebuild post-pandemic, Canada needs more of these communities, and their fighting spirit.”

In his prior time in office, Weston passed two private member’s bills — Tackling Crystal Meth and creating National Health and Fitness Day.

He said other some of his other initiatives found their way into legislation and policy, such as a campaign to deal with abandoned vessels; work to improve the registered retirement savings fund for seniors; support for the Pacific Salmon Foundation and DFO’s research laboratory in West Vancouver; and support for people in recovery from addictions.
