A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the Squamish River, Stawamus River and surrounding creeks and tributaries.

The River Forecast Centre is warning residents to use extra caution and keep well back from river banks, especially with children and pets. Water is expected to rise rapidly, but with no major flooding occuring. The highest flows are forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday.

A transition in weather is happening across the South Coast as cold Arctic air is pushed out by warm air from the Pacific.

“Heavy rainfall is expected over the next few days, with total rainfall amounts from Monday through Wednesday forecasted to reach upwards of 200 mm,” the River Forecast Centre said in the advisory.

As the temperature gets warmer, snow is expected to melt, adding additional runoff to rivers.
