The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has determined that a male body found inside a burned SUV on the Cheekye Forest Service Road is connected to a homicide.

Squamish RCMP were notified of the vehicle, a 2000 red GMC Yukon XL, on June 14 and found the body inside.

"Due to the difficulty of fire investigations and the suspicious nature of the incident IHIT was engaged from the onset," said Cpl. Sascha Banks in a news release sent out today. IHIT is now working on the file with the Squamish RCMP and the BC Coroner's Service.

The male hasn’t been identified and his age is unknown. IHIT is asking anyone with information about the victim, the SUV or any suspicious activity on the Cheekye Forest Service Road between June 13 and June 14 to contact them.

“This investigation is in the early stages and the risk to the public, if any, has yet to be determined. When more details are gathered and if there is a need to notify the public, a media release will be provided,” the press release says.

If you have any information, contact IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or [email protected]. Contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) if you want to be anonymous.
