Police look at the truck allegedly involved in an accident.

One woman is dead after being struck by a truck at Highway 99 in Squamish on Thursday night (Sept. 4).

The woman, whose name was not released by press time, was crossing east-west on Highway 99 at Mamquam Road shortly after 9 p.m. when a truck heading northbound on a green light hit her. She was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Sgt. Wayne Pride of the Squamish RCMP said he’s unsure if the woman, born in 1953, was a Squamish resident. Her next of kin do not reside in Squamish and have been notified. Pride added that there was no sign of impairment on the part of the driver.

The Sea to Sky Highway was closed between 2 and 4 a.m for the investigation.

Whistler resident David Buzzard came across the scene of the accident around
10 p.m. A red Dodge truck with a dent in its hood was parked near the intersection of Mamquam Road and Hwy. 99, Buzzard wrote in an email to the Squamish Chief. Buzzard was driving home at the time. Witnesses told him people performed CPR on the victim at the site before the ambulance arrived.

Squamish RCMP then investigated another serious incident after a cyclist was struck on Highlands Way at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Thursday night.

The cyclist, travelling without a helmet, was proceeding southbound when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a vehicle sustaining head injuries. The Squamish resident, born in 1969, was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital where surgery was performed. He remains there in serious condition.
