Lawsuit filed in fatal Hwy. 99 crash

News

The widow of one of seven Squamish residents who lost their lives in a deadly head-on crash on Hwy. 99 last January is suing four people involved in the accident, including the estates of the two dead drivers.

Baljit Kaur Dhanoa of Squamish filed a suit in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver last Thursday (March 3) against the estate of Jasdeep Singh Sandhu of Squamish, Jagjit S. Sandhu of Squamish, Wade Allan Gomer of Vancouver and the estate of Alexander George Barbour of Squamish under the Family Compensation Act.

The statement of claim alleges that Jasdeep Sandhu was driving a car with Dhanoa's husband, Balwinder Singh Dhanoa, and three other people home from work in Whistler on Jan. 31, 2004 when it crossed the centre line, colliding with Gomer's northbound vehicle and then hitting a vehicle driven by Barbour head-on.

The claim alleges that Jasdeep Sandhu, Gomer and Barbour were all driving negligently and further alleges that Jagjit Sandhu, the registered owner of the car driven by Jasdeep Sandhu, was negligent for failing to maintain the car in proper mechanical condition.

The claim is being made by Baljit Dhanoa on her own behalf and on behalf of the couple's 15-month-old daughter, Jasleen Dhanoa, for loss of guidance and companionship of a husband and father, loss of support, loss of household assistance and loss of inheritance, as well as special damages including funeral and medical expenses and court costs.

The statement of claim does not specify an amount.

The crash happened just south of Depot Road.
