Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, has been appointed parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Goldsmith-Jones to support the Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Dion Thursday.

“As a former mayor of West Vancouver and acknowledged environmental champion, Ms. Goldsmith-Jones’ experience will be vital as we work hand-in-hand to deliver on my full mandate, particularly the challenge of revitalizing Canada’s public diplomacy and stakeholder engagement, and working alongside the minister of environment and climate change to make Canada an international leader on climate change,” Dion said in a news release.

Goldsmith-Jones said she was honoured to take the position. “Canada’s reputation in the world begins here at home, and I look forward to building strong relationships with my colleagues in the House of Commons, and our partners abroad,” she said.

Parliamentary secretaries act as a link between ministers and members of the House and can act on behalf of ministers. They serve on committees and may take on some special assignments. The role of parliamentary secretary can also be a training ground for a ministerial position, according to a Parliament of Canada guidebook.
