Social media is abuzz with talk about an earthquake felt in Squamish shortly before 2 a.m. this morning.

The earthquake was a magnitude 2.3, according to Earthquakes Canada, but was felt by people living throughout Squamish because the epicentre is only around 15 kilometres northwest of town.

On a local Facebook group, members reported being woken up when the earthquake occurred at 1:49 a.m.

“This is a good reminder that we have earthquakes in Squamish,” said John Cassidy, head of Earthquake Seismology at Natural Resources Canada, adding that the Great British Columbia Shakeout, in which people participate in drills, is on Oct. 20.

No damage was reported and it wouldn't be expected with this size of earthquake, Cassidy said.

Earthquake Canada is working on an update on a more exact precise of where the quake started.
